The BIT guide to safe computing
- 1.
Always keep your local antivirus, updated and do regular scans
(Malware infection is a realistic threat in these times and not covered by your warranty or support agreement.)
Avoid downloading, software e.g. from unknown/foreign websites as these could potentially contain malicious software e.g. spyware and adware.
- 2.
Be very conservative and aware when opening strange e-mails as this is where the biggest threat lies.
Remember that being safe is better than being sorry.
- 3.
Net surfing on untrusted web-sites could lead to modules and software infecting your computer and causing havoc.
- 4.
Ransomware has become a part of our every day lives.
If you have sensitive data that you can not afford to lose,
ensure that you have an up-to-date backup at a secure, off-site location.
- 5.
Always handle a computer with respect.
A computer can stop working if it has been physically abused.
- 6.
Test the harddrives of you computer on a regular basis via a S.M.A.R.T. test.
